Are you a friend of the King?
I’m reading in 1 Chronicles at this time. This morning I was reading a passage that was pretty boring, if I may be so bold! It is a list of all the people who had positions in David’s kingdom. It covers every position imaginable from priest, musicians, gatekeepers, treasurers, officials, military leaders, leaders of the tribes, and more. The list goes on and on for pages. Finally it winds down at the end of chapter 27. And this is where I found a pleasant surprise.
Right at the end of the list, in verse 34 we read “…and Hushai the Archite was the king’s friend.” To me, that is so awesome. It would have been easy to miss because by this point my eyes were kind of glazed over. But it jumped off the page to me. After listing all the great men and their positions, the writer included one very important man – Hushai, the king’s friend.
So I looked up the name Hushai to see what I could learn about the guy. The only other information about him is in 2 Samuel 15 – 17. This passage shows Hushai’s loyalty to David even when it came at great risk to himself. He was a faithful friend through the good times and the bad.
What an honor to be listed as a friend of the King.
So the question this morning is this: Are you a friend of the king? No, not some earthly kingdom. I’m talking about the King of all Kings, Jesus. Are you a friend of The King? Are you loyal through thick and thin, through the good times and the bad. Can Jesus rely on you to be a faithful friend?
Perhaps someday someone will write the story of your life. When they do, may they write “…and he was the King’s friend.”
Just something to think about.
